Why Mentorship Education Matters More Than Ever
Mentoring programs can elevate performance, especially when it is well designed and participants are well-supported. But designing and running effective mentoring programs requires more than good intentions—it requires education.
Many organizations launch mentoring initiatives to accelerate leadership development, boost retention, or enhance retention. Yet too often, these programs underdeliver because they skip a crucial step: preparing mentors to succeed. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, well-structured mentorship education is essential for achieving the outcomes we expect from these programs. Their guidance underscores that effective mentorship doesn’t just happen—it’s cultivated through intentional design, training, and support.
Our own research in global STEMM mentoring programs reveals why mentorship education is especially vital in cross-cultural or international contexts. Mentors from different cultural backgrounds—particularly those from societies with high power distance—may have fundamentally different expectations about how mentoring should start and function. For example, in some cultures, mentors are expected to lead decisively and avoid personal sharing, while in others, collaboration and rapport-building are foundational. Without education on these differences, well-meaning mentors can unintentionally hinder relationship development and mentee growth.
Mentorship education equips mentoring participants to recognize these dynamics and respond with cultural awareness, humility, and skill. It helps participants learn to set clear expectations, foster mutual trust, and engage in developmental conversations. And importantly, it encourages both mentors and mentees to discuss differences rather than ignore them, creating more inclusive and effective developmental relationships.
As a program manager, investing in mentorship education is one of the smartest decisions you can make. It sets your program apart by giving mentors the tools they need to thrive. It also reinforces your organization's commitment to inclusion and excellence.
